Speech Therapy Homework Q&A

As we welcome a new year, we welcome new questions! This week, we are focusing on questions related to speech therapy homework. Your child may be coming home with a worksheet to review before their next session. What does this mean? How often should we practice? Will we always have homework? Let’s talk about it!

What is speech therapy homework?

Speech therapy homework is used by our team to encourage extra practice of speech tools beyond our clinic doors. This may be as simple as practicing five target words once a day, filling out a worksheet with prepositions, or playing a game of “I Spy” to encourage descriptive sentences. We want to make sure our clients and families understand why we assign homework, what the target goal is, and how to approach the homework activity. Homework works best when our clients and their families are both on board. Our team, families, and clients are what makes therapy successful! By having everyone involved and on the same page, homework can be a great way to carry over skills at home.

When will my child get homework?

Clients are assigned homework based on a variety of elements. Before we assign homework, we want to make sure that the client can complete their homework successfully. Homework should be doable, engaging, and stress-free. Our team wants to ensure that our clients are practicing their speech skills with accuracy. Once we feel clients can be successful at home practicing a target skill, we may send them homework to complete before their next session. Each client has unique and tailored goals, so each client’s timeframe for receiving homework will be different. It is okay to not have homework right away! All of our clients work incredibly hard. Receiving or not receiving homework is dependent on several factors.

How long should homework assignments take?

Speech therapy homework assignments should be short and easy to complete. We understand that many of our families come from busy households with busy schedules. With this in mind, we try to keep our speech homework doable and straight to the point. Homework should only take a couple of minutes to complete and should be stress-free. If your family has any concerns or questions regarding your child’s homework assignments, please feel free to talk to our team so we can answer any lingering questions you may have!
